SOH System

Combustion Control and Slag Formation
Prevention

Application Areas

  • Thermal power plants (TPPs)
  • Boiler installations
  • Coal-fired power generation
  • Industrial steam boilers and hot-water boilers

The Challenge

One of the primary operational limitations of coal-fired boiler systems is the formation of slagging and ash deposits within the combustion zone and on heat-transfer surfaces.

SOH SYSTEM does not replace SCR or SNCR systems.
It reduces the load placed on them by controlling combustion
directly within the flame zone.

Thermal power plant

The Main Causes Include:

  • Incomplete carbon oxidation and elevated levels of unburned carbon in ash
  • Non-uniform temperature distribution within the flame zone
  • Localized overheating and temperature peaks
  • Instability of aerodynamics and fuel-air mixing

Operational Consequences

  • Reduced heat-transfer efficiency
  • Increased metal temperatures and localized overheating
  • Reduced thermal efficiency
  • Increased frequency of mechanical and hydrodynamic cleaning
  • Unplanned shutdowns
  • Accelerated wear of boiler components

The MiaNOx Solution

SOH SYSTEM controls oxidation kinetics within the flame zone by stabilizing combustion parameters:

  • Equalization of the temperature profile
  • Improved carbon oxidation efficiency
  • Reduction of unburned carbon content in ash residue

As a result, ash is formed with
increased reactivity and a binding
phase containing residual carbon,
leading to:

  • Agglomeration of ash particles
  • Formation of fused and highly adhesive deposits
  • Intensive fouling of radiant and convective heat-transfer surfaces

WITHOUT SOH SYSTEM

  • Carbon-based binding phase
  • Ash agglomeration and deposits

WITH SOH SYSTEM

  • Equalized temperature profile
  • Prevention of slag formation
  • Improved heat-transfer efficiency
  • Reduced Thermal NOx formation

Core Mechanism:

Elimination of the carbon-containing binding phase within ash.
This changes the physicochemical properties
of the ash residue:

  • Reduced tendency toward agglomeration
  • Reduced adhesion to heat-transfer surfaces
  • Prevention of dense slag structure formation

Results

  • Prevention of slagging and ash deposition
  • Reduced ash adhesion activity
  • Reduced fouling of heat-transfer surfaces
  • Reduced cleaning requirements
  • Reduced shutdown and maintenance frequency
  • Improved heat-transfer efficiency
  • Stabilized boiler thermal performance

Secondary Environmental Benefits

Through combustion optimization, the following can be achieved:

  • Reduced formation of Thermal NOx
  • Thermal NOx reduction of up to 40–50%
  • Reduced load on SCR and SNCR systems
  • Reduced reagent consumption (ammonia and urea)
  • Reduced overall operating expenditure (OPEX)

System-Wide Effect

  • Elimination of root causes of operational constraints
  • Improved boiler reliability and predictability
  • Reduced burden on operating personnel
  • Extended maintenance intervals
  • Increased equipment service life

Operational Model

Without SOH SYSTEM:

Incomplete Combustion Carbon-Based Binding Phase Ash Agglomeration Deposits Overheating Shutdown

With SOH SYSTEM:

Complete Oxidation No Binding Phase Dispersed Ash Residue Stable Boiler Operation

Core Principle

No Carbon-Based Binding Phase No Agglomeration No Deposits

BAT Compliance

SOH SYSTEM aligns with the principles of Best Available Techniques (BAT) as an in-furnace primary technology designed to:

  • Reduce pollutant formation during combustion
  • Improve fuel utilization efficiency
  • Minimize the load on downstream emission control systems

Key Statement

The technology operates directly within the flame zone and eliminates the root cause of slag formation while reducing NOx generation and improving combustion efficiency without boiler modernization.
